OB/GYN-wanna-be Rep. Byron Donalds appeared on NBC’s Meet the Press last weekend and showed the entire country just how little he knows about women’s reproductive healthcare.
After several minutes of auditioning to be former President Trump’s vice presidential pick, NBC host Kristen Welker asked “Doctor” Donalds about the shocking Alabama Supreme Court ruling declaring embryos created by in vitro fertilization (IVF) procedures are now to be considered to be children.1
His answers on IVF were a word-salad of absolute ignorance.
Watch from 4:31 minute mark
His IVF incomprehension was first on display last week at the extreme rightwing CPAC conference where he embraced the Alabama ruling, declaring embryos were children because “embryos grow into being adults, like we are:’2
Then Donalds tried to walk back his statement on Meet the Press by proclaiming he had several friends who have used IVF and he could “broadly support” legislation protecting IVF because (and we’re not making this up!) it helps couples “breed great families.”3
Breed. Great. Families.
Here’s the problem with Ob/gyn-wanna-be Byron Donalds ignorant position on IVF: It is impossible for him to support IVF while also co-sponsoring the Life at Conception Act which “declares that the right to life guaranteed by the Constitution is vested in each human being at all stages of life, including the moment of fertilization…”
Unlike Byron Donalds, I am not running for Congress to be your Ob/gyn doctor.
I am running to protect women’s reproductive healthcare from ignorant extremists like Donalds. Women’s healthcare should be left to the actual doctors, free from interference from the likes of Byron Donalds and his extremist cohorts. Children are not livestock to be bred.
Since the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision upending a half century of rights for women, we have seen chaos throughout our country. Rape victims forced to carry their rapists child to term… a ten-year old victimized by incest having to cross state lines to terminate her pregnancy… mothers with pregnancy complications that threaten their very lives being denied care by zealot politicians and judges…
The only way to end the dystopian chaos plaguing women’s reproductive healthcare is to stop electing doctor-wanna-be fanatics like Byron Donalds.
